Cross Tattoos: What They Mean

Cross tattoos have many different meanings. Although the most obvious is religious symbolism, there are other reasons many decide on this design. Most of us associate cross tattoos with the Christian religion. Although this is often the case, these popular designs can also have other meanings. Here is a rundown of some of the most common reasons why people get cross tattoos.

Christian or Catholic symbolism plays an important role in choosing certain tattoo designs. Although Christian and Catholic symbolism is not the only basis for cross tattoos, it is a very important one. Many Christians and Catholics feel very strongly about their religious convictions and find this is a good way to express faith by placing permanent declaration of it on their body.

Christian and Catholic cross tattoos usually feature the Latin cross, which has three equal spokes pointing up and to each side, and one long spoke pointing down -- like a lower case letter T. Some Catholic tattoos feature a crucifix, which depicts Jesus being crucified on the cross.

The Celtic cross is often a combination of two different symbols: the Latin cross, and a circle. The circle is usually centered over the place where the two lines in the Latin cross intersect.

Celtic inspired tattoos combine religious and mystical symbolism from two very different cultures. The obvious one is the Christian concept of being saved from damnation. However, the circle also represents the ancient concept that is sometimes flippantly referred to as the circle of life -- the notion that life and death is cyclical and eternal.

Other Celtic crosses feature intricate Celtic knots throughout the design. Because these knots are never-ending, they carry the same symbolism as the circle. People who get Celtic cross tattoos may do so because of the Christian symbolism, the pagan symbolism, a combination thereof, or simply to express pride in their Celtic heritage.

The Maltese cross has become a popular symbol of courage and sacrifice in today's culture. For example, firefighters wear the Maltese design as a sign of their dedication to their job. This dates back to the Crusades, when the Knights of St. John, who were from Malta, fought to save their comrades from a new weapon that burned the troops alive.

The Maltese cross is an eight-pointed cross, consisting of four equal-length V-shaped prongs. Each point is said to represent a facet of heroism, such as loyalty, honesty, contempt of death, and religious faith. Therefore, Maltese cross tattoos symbolize courage and the hero's ultimate sacrifice.

The iron cross is a cross symbol that is infamous for its connection with the German military. The symbol, which has four equal prongs that flare out at each end, was first used by the German military in 1870. Although it was only a symbol of the armed forces back then, over time the iron cross was used as a military decoration during times of war. As a result, these designs are now strongly associated with military valor and German history.

As you can see, there are many different kinds of cross tattoos, with different meanings attributed to each. Crosses have been a revered symbol since long before Christianity; therefore the symbolism of these tattoos can range from pagan or Christian, to more general values such as courage.

Tattoo sleeve ideas (pic included)?

I recentlly had a Celtic knot tattoo on my arm, but want more added to it and am thinking about turning it into a sleeve that may branch out onto my chest slightly. I'm quite liking the Polynesian tribal styles, but I was wondering if a Polynesian design would go well with a Celtic one? I am also quite open to using colour, anyone have any ideas?

Considering it's already got the celtic and tribal look to it you will want to stay with that theme. Looks like you'll need the color touched up on what you have so far. A good artist should be able to blend the Ploynesian with the Celtic well. I would find a good artist and have them give you some ideas. This wesbite may help you with some designs. Tattoo Ideas... Help?!?

my friend and I want to get our 2nd tattoo's done together and we want the tattoo to mean something/represent our friendship.
I don't particularly want a word, more of a design. Although I have thought about the Maori Cook Island word for friendship. We've both got strong connections to NZ, music and travel.
We've also been talking about this for a few years, so it's not something spur of the moment or something I might regret.
Any help would be great =)

a few questions about tattoos?

i want a sleeve tattoo and i found a design i really like.
if i showed them pictures of it at all different angles, would they be able to do it. This is probably gonna cost over $1000 too right? and they would end up doing this in sections so would i pay each time i go back for a different section or would i pay for the whole thing when its done?

My suggestion to you is to shop for an artist. Find the right artist for you by looking at different portfolios and asking others who have ink...where they suggest.

Talk to the artist and see which one fits you. Different Artist have different specialites. One may like doing large color pieces and one maybe better at Black work (Shading, tribal, etc.)...while others like Japanese influenced work better than others.

As far as the piece you want. Please dont copy anyone else's tattoo. It is an insult to copy anyone's work. My suggestion is to show the artist you pick to do the work what you like and let them do an original tattoo inspired by the art you like.

This way you get your very own original and you are not coping anyone's ink.

Depending on the reputation of the artist you choose....and the detail...it will vary on cost. could be anywhere from $800 to $2000. Just depends on how much detail and color and time. As far as different sections or whole thing when its done. You can do it all at once or pay as you go.

Sit for the time to do it and pay for the whole thing after done in one sitting...or do outline and pay, then do some color here and some color there...and pay as you go. This may actually cost a little more than just doing it in one to two sittings.

I would talk to your artist and see what he recommends.

Angel Wing Designs (for tattoos)?

Does anyone know where to find angel wing designs for a tattoo? I've tried some websites that have galleries of designs, but they're always too vauge, anyone know where I can find just the wings? (I'm tired of searching thorugh pics of nudie angels lol)

Hi! I don't know of any galleries of angel wings specifically. however, I'm an artist and could work with you on designing something that would suit you. I think it really depends on size and where it's going to be too.

I don't know if Jasmine Becket-Griffith has any angels in her galleries (I know primarily she's a fairy girl but she may have some angels), and her website is strangeling.com.

I would be happy to help you if you'd like one designing just for you though and would consider it the ultimate compliment for my artwork to be used as tattoo reference material!

Half sleeve question...

I'm seriously considering a half sleeve because the design I want is beautiful and needs a large amount of space to acheive what I want. I'm not sure about my back because I want to look at it!!!

Someone on here actually found a picture of what I want to do, which is basically the Birth of Venus in the form of a half sleeve. I didn't think it could be done til I found the picture, on my arm I mean.

So what do you think of this general design? I want different colors of course, I just want to hear some opinions.

PS This will be my first tattoo, I'm 22 years old, I know it lasts forever, a half sleeve won't influence my job, and I don't care if it looks bad when I'm 80.

I learned about the birth of Venus and other mythology when I was 7 and I've always had a thing for tattoos depicting a scene.

Very good choice, I myself and getting a full sleeve based around my interpretation of the Om Mani Padme Hum, or "The jewel of the lotus".
