Whats a good way to join together ideas on a tattoo sleeve?

I would like to have a vibrant and bright tattoo on my arm, ideally a half sleeve leaking into a smaller chest piece with perhaps some detailing at the top of my other arm.

My main focus in this question is on the sleeve/chest area:

What is the best way to link ideas in a sleeve?

I want a red rose as the main piece, but with two smaller golden roses incorporated.

I would also like to see at least one generic star in there as I am a huge fan, and the nautical star is significant to me (however, I want to leave it as an outline as I have plans for an internal design for the star at a later date).

I am also trying to incorporate my name into it, possibly in symbol form (5 symbols) and am toying with the idea of slipping my DOB or birth year into it also.

How do I link these things together without it looking patchy and like a bunch of random things all inked together?

Any tips would be great.

Get together with a tattoo artist and brainstorm. They help people put together stuff every day.
